This gorgeous Art Deco Gatsby era ring features a stunning oval Verneuil Sapphire to the centre in a bezel and mill grain setting. Verneuil Sapphires are a Synthetic Sapphire which have the same physical and chemical properties as a naturally occurring Sapphire, including the same density and hardness of a natural stone. The Sapphire is surrounded by a row of fourteen natural Old Cut Diamonds each in a bezel setting with a pretty pierced basket below leading to the dainty band.
During the Art Deco era the process of creating Sapphires was a new phenomenon! The interest in advancements in technology and science at the time meant the demand for these Sapphires was high and they were considered a huge feat in technology.
The development of synthetic Sapphires began when chemist Auguste Verneuil began synthesizing Corundum in the 1870s, joining other scientists Verneuil discovered flame fusion and soon found that adding different elements would create other synthetic gemstones such as synthetic Ruby. After many years of experiments it wasn’t until 1909 that Verneuil discovered that adding Iron and Titanium would create blue Sapphire. In 1911 he was awarded two patents for the discovery and the Sapphires were from then on known as Verneuil Sapphires. The rough stones are then cut and polished in the same way as a natural piece of Sapphire would be.
The Verneuil Sapphire is calculated to weigh 1.35 Carat, the colour is a totally stunning deep cornflower blue which looks exactly like a natural Ceylon Sapphire. The Old Cut Diamonds have been calculated in the setting and are estimated to weigh 0.05 Carat each, totalling 0.70 Carat. SI2 Clarity and I Colour. One Diamond has a small chip, this is only visible under magnification, but this doesn’t affect the ring in any way.
Made in Platinum. Faint stamp to the band.
The setting measures 15mm x 13mm.
A stunning ring which would make for a spectacular engagement ring or equally as stunning as a right hand ring. A lovely smooth and low setting with fine detail and all the glamour and sparkle which is associated with the Art Deco era.
